What is STANAG 2920?

Military standards for ballistic protection & armour
Solutions for military applications are tested according to relevant NATO standards, normally STANAG 2920 (STANAG= NATO Standardization Agreement).
STANAG 2920 The adoption of standards for ballistic protection levels and testing
STANAG 2920 is used to measure materials ability to stop fragments and shrapnel. The measuring technique is used in all situations where fragments are a concern.
Products in the VestGuard Range that undergo STANAG testing include body armour and protective helmets.

Tests to STANAG 2920 are conducted by shooting FSPs (Fragment Simulating Projectiles) at the test sample at different velocities. Each FSP velocity is recorded. By altering the velocities, an estimate of the ballistic tolerance can be calculated, which is the speed up to which the material defeats incoming fragments.

The test that VestGuard undertakes is known as the STANAG 2920 V50 test. This is an internationally recognised standard for assessing the fragmentation resistance of personal protective equipment. Tested using the method above the V50 is a record of the ballistic speed, measured in metres per second, which is the average of the velocities recorded for six fair impacts consisting of the three lowest velocities for complete penetration and the three highest velocities for partial penetration.
